在古人的逻辑中,有天地人自然之和,人文之和,而达于和必取其中,也就是当触及到对立面的相互转化时,和与中才相联系,形成中和。对于和与中的关系,董仲舒在《春秋繁露·循天之道》中的辨析颇为明晰:“中者,天地之所终始也,而和者,天地之所生成也。夫德莫大于和,而道莫正于中。”并进一步断定:“中之所为,而必就于和。……中者天之用也,和者天之功也。”在他看来天地之道“起于中而止于中”,中是规律、尺度,和是境界、目的。没有和的境界,中就失去意义;没有中的尺度,和也就无法达到了。
