The Learning and Practice of the CHUI Exercise

Wei Sheng Ge (Health Song) written by Sun Simiao said, “Practicing XI Exercise in the autumn and CHUI Exercise in the winter is beneficial to the kidneys and lungs”. According to the relationship of generation among five elements, Sun Simiao re-adjusted the correspondence between Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue and the internal organs. Corresponding to the kidneys, CHUI Exercise conforms to the winter. Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue has inherited the paradigm of generation among five elements stressed by Sun Simiao. Making the sound of CHUI can discharge the foul qi of kidney and regulate the functions of kidneys. The expiration and inspiration and movements of CHUI Exercise are developed around the kidneys.

Kidneys are the viscera with functions of reproduction and development, controlling all kinds of abilities. The functions of kidneys in the Traditional Chinese Medicine are more than that in the Western Medicine. The essence of kidneys in the Traditional Chinese Medicine also includes the functions of the endocrine system, the hypothalamus gland system, and a part of the cerebral cortex and immune system in Western Medicine. Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon of Medicine) said that the kidneys are the viscera with functions of reproduction and development, controlling all kinds of abilities. Wang Bing noted that the kidneys make man strong and make woman agile and skilful. Zhang Zhicong noted that kidney storing wills, which affect all kinds of abilities. Ma Shi noted that the kidneys govern the physical strength and intelligence. Kidneys govern the bones and produce the marrow, with functions of reproduction and development. Sufficient kidney qi contributes strong and healthy bones and tendons, so that people are agile and energetic. Brain being the marrow sea, kidneys produces the essence, and the essence produces the marrow, which is called brain marrow in the brain. Therefore, the sufficient essence contributes to the vigorous marrow sea and the intelligence of people. Conversely, the deficiency of kidney essence leads to the insufficient of marrow, amnesia, insomnia and mental retardation.

Kidneys in the traditional health science are also related to the reproduction, respiration, digestion, water metabolism, ear, waist, teeth, bones and brain of human body. First, kidneys are related to the reproductive function of human body. The term "reproductive system" cannot be found in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the reproductive function of the body is included in the functions of kidneys. The prescription drugs to treat sexual dysfunction, nocturnal emission and infertility by Traditional Chinese Medicine mostly concern with the kidneys. Second, kidneys govern inspiration. Traditional health science believes that breathing relies on the kidneys and lungs. Breathing is the primary responsibility of the lungs, but it needs the assistant of kidneys. Kidney deficiency will affect the inspiration, so that people exhale more and inhale less. Kidney-nourishing and qi-absorbing therapy is used to treat chronic bronchitis and emphysema by Traditional Chinese Medicine, which just uses the function of “kidney governing inspiration”. Third, kidneys are related to the digestive function. The kidney yang can warm spleen and stomach, and promote digestion. It is like the process of cooking congee, requiring the pot (stomach receiving food and drink), spoon (spleen governing transportation and transformation) and fire (warmth of kidney yang), which need the cooperation of the three partners. When Yang Fire of Mingmen point is weak, food will not be digested well, causing chronic diarrhea as a result of spleen deficiency. Fourth, kidneys are the water viscera, which are related to the fluid metabolism of the body. In the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, kidneys have presided over the water metabolism of the body and maintained the balance. Su Wen • Ni Diao Lun said that kidneys are the water viscera, governing the fluid of body, which also mainly relies on the kidney yang. Kidney yang can warm the lung and spleen through the transpiration and transformation of water and food. If the kidneys are weak and lack of transpiration, the function of “ascending clear” will weaken, so that the liquid will be detained, causing edema or ascites. Kidneys separate the clear from the waste, governing opening and closing of the urine. The waste water transported to the kidneys from the organs and tissues of the human body is re-distributed through the gasification of kidneys. The clear ascends to the lungs through the triple energizers and then distributed to the whole body. The waste is transformed to the urine and transported to the bladder. Fifth, kidneys rea related to the brain, bones, teeth and waist. Kidney governs bones and kidney essence governs marrow. So kidneys are directly related to the toughness of bones. Adequate kidney essence contributes to the normal development of marrow and strong bones. Teeth are the surplus of the bone. Adequate kidney essence is conductive to healthy bone and teeth. Waist is the surplus of the kidney. Generally, the backache, low back pain and waist cold are concerned with the kidneys. Kidney opens at the ears. Ear is the hearing organ, the normal auditory function of human is closely related to the gain and loss of the kidneys. People with adequate kidney essence can see and hear better.

The sound of CHUI is a labial sound in the CHUI Exercise. In the pronunciation process, the shape of mouth is changing, which is the more difficult sound in the Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue. First, figure out the five notes classification of CHUI. The modern Chinese consonant of CHUI is "ch", which belongs to the teeth sound. Why the sound of CHUI is classified as a labial sound? It is mainly followed the traditional method, the archaic Chinese phonology of CHUI should belong to labial sound. The Chinese character CHUI is composed by two Chinese characters, namely Kou and Qian. The style of writing of Qian in the Oracle is that a person blow with the mouth. The Chinese character Kou (mouth) has emphasized that blow with mouth, so the original meaning of CHUI should be that blow hard with closed lips. According to many ancient classics, the pronunciation speed of CHUI is very fast, and the air breathed out is chill. Later, the pronunciation of CHUI was changed in the ancient Chinese phonology times, which has been like the modern pronunciation. In the Guang Yun written in the Song Dynasty, CHUI belonged to dental sound. But the sound of CHUI in the Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue must be the labial sound, thus belonging to the water in the five elements and corresponding to kidney. Therefore, exercisers should pay special attention to the change in the process of making the sound of CHUI. The pronunciation process of CHUI Exercise is divided into three steps, which is feasible. But it also should be noted that the pronunciation length of the three sounds (ch, u, i) should be different. The sound of “ch” should be weakened and its pronunciation time is minimized, the sound of “u” should be strengthened and its pronunciation time is extended, and the sound of “i” can be made by the way when finishing the pronunciation. Because the sound of “u” (w) is attributed to the labial sound, so taking "u" as the main body in the whole pronunciation process make the word CHUI more close to the labial sound. The pronunciation method can be summarized as that leading the lips from the front to back, taking “u” sound centered and “i” sound assisted.

The body movements in the CHUI Exercise can regulate the kidneys. The main body movements of CHUI Exercise are that palms together in the front of the abdomen, massaging Dai channel, pushing against lumbar eye, and slipping down and swing forward. It can be seen that these major actions of CHUI Exercise are designed around the waist and kidney. First, palms together in the front of the abdomen. Palms opposite Dantian obliquely,Laogong points and Dantian form a closed triangle. Huang Ting Wai Jing Jing• Shang Bu Jing said that breathing to the Dantian. Wu Chengzi noted that inhaling the Primordial Qi and sank down to Dantian, the genitals three inches under the navel are used to have children by normal people and used to nourish the body by the Taoist priest. Dantian is the place to collect Primordial Qi and kidney is the place to produce Primordial Qi, so Dantian and kidney are closely related. Palms together in the front of the abdomen are in favor of collecting Primordial Qi. Second, massage Dai channel. Dai channel is a meridian horizontally around the waist of body. Nan Jing written by Yang Xuancao said that Dai means restriction, restraining various meridians to coordinate them. Waist and abdomen are the place for the uterus and lower energizer. Restraining various meridians is in favor of securing and containing the lower energizer. Therefore, Dai channel, Chong channel and Ren channel are closely related to the reproductive organs and kidneys. Massaging Dai channel can regulate qi and blood of the kidneys, and horizontally guide qi of Dantian and Mingmen point, so as to form the horizontal ties. Third, push against lumbar eye. Waist is the House of kidney, and lumbar eye is the location of kidney. Pushing against lumbar eye means to protect the kidney. Fourth, palms slipping down and swing forward. An important role of this action is to guide qi of the lumbar eye downward along with palms, going through the perineum, and back to Dantian, forming the vertical linkages between qi of the waist, kidney and Dantian. The pronunciation method can be summarized as follows.

The method verses of CHUI Exercise: Leading the lips from the front to back, taking “u” sound centered and “i” sound assisted. Palms together in the front of abdomen and massage Dai channel. Push against lumbar eyes and swing downward and forward.
