Experience of Teaching “Hibiscus Rising out of Water”(2)

Teaching

Teaching is divided into three steps: step one is action teaching, step two is breathing with action teaching, and step three is artistic conception with action teaching.

Movement Teaching

In Health Qigong teaching, first of all, beginners should understand the direction and course of the action, and build the preliminary concept of action. On this basis, in order to master the action details further, the teacher can make use of decomposition teaching method of upper-lower separating and front-back disconnecting.

Upper limb decomposition teaching: palm backs in front of stomach→wrists and fingers bending four times and flipping nails→arms moving upwards paralleling with the shoulders→turning internally and changing into fists→turning internally and warping wrists→elbows moving downwards and changing into the shape of holding a lotus→palms lifting up→turning internally and moving upwards to the level of the shoulders→arms moving downwards

Lower limb decomposition teaching: feet standing together→body weight shifting right, while left heel lifting→left foot moving out→body weight shifting between legs→legs stretching straightly→body shifting left→right leg crossing the step into packing step→body weight shifting upwards→right foot moving to the right side→body weight shifting between legs→legs stretching straightly→body weight moving right→left leg moving back→legs standing together

Decomposition teaching for coordinating between the upper and lower limbs: feet getting together, while arms drooping→left heel lifting, and the dorsa of palms face to face→left foot moving towards one side and body weight shifting upwards, while wrists and fingers bending four times and flipping nails→legs stretching straightly, while arms moving upwards paralleling with the shoulders→body weight shifting left, and hands turning internally and changing into fists→crossing step into packing step, turning internally and warping wrists→packing step in the shape of holding a lotus→right foot moving to one side into the shape of holding a lotus→legs stretching straightly, while palms lifting up→body weight shifting right, then turning internally and moving upwards paralleling with the shoulders→left leg moving backwards and stretching straightly with arms drooping

Breathing with Movement Teaching

Health Qigong • Daoyin Yang Sheng Gong Shi Er Fa uses the breathing method of inverse abdomen style. The coordination between the action of “Hibiscus Rising out of Water” and breathing is as follow: moving the left leg out with four times bending, flipping nails, and then arms stretching to both sides with inhaling; packing step, warping wrists with breathing; legs standing straightly, and lifting up in the shape of holding a lotus with inhaling; moving the left foot back, while arms drooping and breath restoring.

Artistic Conception with Movement Teaching

Hibiscus is also known as lotus. And its character of growing unsullied from mud brings a tranquil and nice world to us.

Bending four times and flipping nails: legs stretched slowly and straightly, meanwhile, the first, second and third finger bones rolling in order with palms supported by wrists and then flipping the nails, as if slightly flipping pure and clean water dips blending silently with the boundless world.

Packing style: first crossing step, then crouching downwards into packing step, as if the root of lotus with delightful and noble flowers coiling in the solid. Its implied meaning is that though we live in a highly changeable world, our hearts should be calm and clean, or otherwise, be caught by the physical desire.

Lifting up in the shape of holding a lotus: the bottoms of palms lifting upwards in front of the chest in the shape of blossoming a lotus, the body moving upwards slowly, and palms lifting up, as if l a noble lotus coming from water. Besides, the mental state should be free and easy. Thu, the artistic conception is different from imagine, and with long-term continuously exercising, this pure and calm mental state should be able to come naturally.

In a word, when learning and practicing actions, we should do it step by step. Under the condition that basic method are acquired, the learners should be able to do those decomposition exercises; and when they mastered the details of the action, the breathing exercise should be added for them; And after the action and breathing coordination are well done, they should be brought into the practice of ideation. During the serious course of long-term exercise, the learners can achieve a healthy state of harmonious unity of form, qi, and spirit.
