The Learning and Practice of the XI Exercise

XI Exercise is the last exercise of Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue. The body movements are large-scale, and its main function is to regulate the triple energizers. Making the sound of XU can release and discharge the foul smell, and the large-scale movements are also designed for conditioning the triple energizers.

Triple energizers are the organs in charge of water circulation. Triple energizers are included in the six hollow organs. Traditional health science believes that the triple energizers are the channels to transport the essence and liquid of human body. They are divided into the upper energizer, middle energizer and lower energizer, according to their positions. So Su Wen• Ling Lan Mi Dian Lun said that triple energizers are the organs in charge of water circulation. Being different from other organs, the triple energizers are not substantive organs, but a kind of channel, so Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that they are appearance without reality. Triple energizers are widely distributed in the chest cavity with specific names but without specific forms. Narrowly speaking, the upper energizer refers to the channel taking charge of transporting liquid and purification material above the diaphragm, the middle energizer refers to the channel below the diaphragm and above the navel, and the lower energizer refers to the channel below the navel. Generally speaking, triple energizers include the thorax and abdomen and all organs. For example, the upper energizer includes the thorax, heart and lung, the middle energizer includes the upper abdominal cavity, spleen, stomach, liver and gallbladder, and the lower energizer includes the lower abdominal cavity, kidneys, bladder, large intestine and small intestine, etc. The triple energizers regulated by the massage and Tao Yin usually refer to the generalized triple energizers.

Triple energizers are the channels to transport the liquid, water and nutrients, as well as to smooth and regulate qi movement of the body. First, transporting the liquid, water and nutrients mainly refers that triple energizers are in charge of transporting the diet for human. Su Wen• Liu Jie Zang Xiang Lun said that the triple energizers are the root of granary. Triple energizers also gather nutrient qi of the body. Specifically, the roles of triple energizers are different. Nan Jing said that the upper energizer is "all in without out” above the diaphragm, the upper energizer takes charge of digesting food in the middle part of gastric cavity, and the lower energizer is ”all out without in” and separates the clear from the foul above the bladder. Due to the different positions of triple energizers, their roles are different too. The upper energizer is responsible for absorbing, the middle energizer is responsible for digesting food, and the lower energizer is responsible for separating and releasing. It can be seen that the functions of triple energizers are digestion, absorption and excretion in the terms of the modern medicine. Second, the triple energizers are the main channels for the transportation of water. Triple energizers are to human body what pipelines are to cities, which can not only transport the useful materials, such as water, electricity and gas, but also excrete waste water or liquid, etc. The waste and liquid transported by triple energizers ensures the normal circulation of internal fluids of the body. So the triple energizers are known as the organs in charge of water circulation. Third, the triple energizers are still the channels for the access of Promordial Qi, which flows to the internal organs and whole body through the triple energizers. Nan Jing said that the triple energizers are the channels for water and nutrients, and the beginning and ending of qi. And it also said that the triple energizers among the six organs govern all kinds of qi. Promordial Qi is an important concept in traditional Chinese health study, which can be taken as the initial and primitive motive power to maintain the life. Triple energizers can smooth the Promordial Qi, which also shows their key effect.

We have detailed that Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue is an important exercise in the prior articles, and its practice order is in accordance with the order of generation among five elements. The previous five exercises in the Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue successively corresponds to wood (XU, liver), fire (HE, heart), earth (HU, spleen), gold (Xi, lung), water (CHUI, kidney) conforming to order of generation among five elements. Then according to this order, the sixth exercise should be XU Exercise corresponding to wood in the five elements, but why there is XI Exercise corresponding to wood IN the five elements? It contains the overall philosophy thinking mode of the traditional Chinese health science. First, the sound pronounced in the XI Exercise is the dental sound, corresponding to wood in the five elements, which still constitutes the interpromoting relation in five elements and conforms with the law of Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue. Second, the triple energizers are the big intangible channel including the internal organs, which is a whole concept. Conditioning the triple energizers is the overall care of the internal organs. The previous five exercises in the Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue successively corresponds to a certain organ, and finally regulate all the organs by adjusting triple energizers in last routine of Health Qigong • Liu Zi Jue, which manifests the overall concept of the traditional health science. Third, XI Exercise can also ease qi movement of the body. Su Wen• Tiao Jing Lun has recorded that the pleasure leads to smooth qi and good emotion, so that nutrient qi and defensive qi are smooth. And when making the sound of XI, exercisers have to smile. According to the law of joy causing qi slack of the health science, XI Exercise can also ease qi movement of the body. Triple Energizers are the channels for the access of the vitality of the body, so Xi Exercise can effectively regulate the triple energizers. Of course, one should not be too pleased, or else qi will be scattered. The formulas put into verse are that it is better to adjust qi movement of the internal organs, XI Exercise regulate the triple energizers entirely.

The body movements of the XI Exercise can regulate the triple energizers.

First, the large-scale hands movements are conductive to dredge qi of the triple energizers. The lifting, separating, pressing, closing and relaxing of XI Exercise is a round turn, connecting the upper energizer, middle energizer and lower energizer, so as to achieve the lifting and falling of qi movement. Second, the guide movements of hands conform to the circulation route of the triple energizer meridian, which is conducive to smooth the qi movement of triple energizers. The circulation route of the triple energizer meridian is that beginning from the ulnar ends of the third fingers, along the back of hands to the wrists, going upward through the area between the ulna and radius, from the elbows and upper arms to the shoulders, meeting Du channel in the Dazhui point, then going through the gall bladder meridian and going upward to the supraclavicular fossa distributed between the two breasts. In the practice of XI Exercise, lift hands in front of the abdomen and chest, raise the elbows slowly, and open arms and palms. The route cooperates with the circulation of triple energizer meridian, which helps to guide qi movement of the body into the triple energizers. In order to facilitate memory exercises, the guide actions of XI Exercise are summarized as follows.

Open and close hands in front of the chest and abdomen, qi movement flows through the triple energizers. It is better to adjust qi movement of the internal organs, XI Exercise regulate the triple energizers entirely. The well-developed circulation of qi movement can cure lots of diseases.
