The Essentials and Principles of “Rhinoceros Looking at the Moon”
In the teaching of Health Qigong· Twelve Step Daoyin Health Preservation Exercises, I found that some fellow practitioners have not pay any attention to the movements, such as, transforming fists into palms, step forward, pulling the heels of the palms and opening the palms. And some exercisers even did not do those movements in the practice. To address this issue, I explained the essentials and principles by the way of individual coaching and group work. I demanded strictly everyone to standardize the movements, and then spell out the principles of the movements.
First, teach the basic movements to show the standardized movements. Basic movements should be that "the left foot steps to the left, turning both fists to palms, with both arms rotating inward and pressing down. The center of gravity moving to the left foot with the left leg bending, keeping the right leg straight, while both arms continue to rotate inward, pulling the heels of the palms and relaxing the wrists, swinging arc to the side of the body. Do the same movements when stepping to the right, just in a different direction. Practice these movements repeatedly, so that the exercisers can remember them. On this basis, explaining the principles of pulling the heels of the palms and relaxing the wrists.
The principles of pulling the heels of the palms and opening the palms should speak from the meridian science of the Traditional Chinese Medicine. The theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that "the meridians are the access of the blood and Qi in the human body, which connects the outside and the inside of the body, a unique system integrating the organs". If the meridians are blocked, it will lead to the Qi stagnation and blood stasis, as well as the disharmony of Qi and blood, which may cause various diseases. Therefore, Ling Shu· Jing Bie Pian said, "The twelve meridians are related to the birth, diseases and death." Ling Shu· Jing Mai Pian also said, "The meridians determine the birth and death, taking charge of cure the diseases and regulating the deficiency and excess, which should be smooth". Since the meridians are related to the organs in the body and associated with the surface, limbs and flesh, which are the way of the circulation of Qi and blood, so the diseases caused by the organs, blood and Qi all can be reflected on the surface. Clearing the meridians and smooth the circulation of Qi and blood through the surface can treat the diseases, which is just as the saying of the Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Treat the diseases with stimulating the meridians nearby. And if the meridian connects with a certain organ, stimulating it can cure the diseases of that organ. “The meridians are the way of the circulation of Qi and blood, including the twelve main meridians, i.e. three yin meridian of hand, three yang meridians of hand, three yang meridians of foot and three yin meridians of foot. There are Source Points in each meridian of the twelve meridians. If there is something wrong with a certain viscera, it will be reflected in the Source Points of this meridian. Therefore, Ling Shu· Jiu Zhen Shi Er Yuan said, "If there are something wrong with the organs, take the twelve Source Points for treatment. If one has cardiovascular disease or lung disease, it will be reflected in the Source Points of the three yin meridian of hand. The Source Points of the three meridians are on the wrists. These are the Taiyuan acupoint, i.e. the Source Point of the lung meridian of hand-taiyin, the Shenmen acupoint, i.e. the Source Point of the heart meridian of hand-shaoyin, and the Daling acupoint, i.e. the Source Point of the pericardium meridian. The movements of pulling the heels of the palms and relaxing the wrists in the routine Rhinoceros Looks at the Moon can exercise the wrists, and such kinds of regular activities can massage the Taiyuan acupoint, the Shenmen acupoint and the Daling acupoint, so that it is conductive to warm the skin, clear the meridians, disperse blood stasis, regulate Qi and blood, calm the five organs, provide the oxygen to the heart, as well as play a role in the prevention and treatment of the cardiovascular diseases and lung diseases.
The movement of making a fist in the routine Rhinoceros Looks at the Moon also requires that pointing to the Laogong acupoint with the Zhongchong acupoint with the middle finger to pull Spontaneous moments points. It contributes to prevent and control the angina, hand numbness, heartburn and other diseases. There are many movements in the routine Rhinoceros Looks at the Moon, e.g. the arms rotating inward and outward, which play significant effects on the prevention and treatment of the diseases, such as the cardiovascular system diseases and lung diseases. As the lung meridian of hand-taiyin, the heart meridian of hand-shaoyin and the pericardium meridian all circulate through the arms, which all flow from the chest to the hands, through the arms, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers. The joints and the small muscles are exercised regularly through the rotation of arms, so that the Source Points and other acupoints of the lung meridian of hand-taiyin, the heart meridian of hand-shaoyin and the pericardium meridian are self-massaged, thus smoothing the flow of meridians and blood to achieve the balance, so as to play a role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular system diseases and lung diseases.
Explaining the profound in simple terms helps the exercisers to understand the significance and principles of pulling the heels of the palms, opening the palms, and then relaxing the wrists. The exercisers were pleased to say that they did not know the principles in the past, so they have not pay any attention to these movements and the movements were not standardized in the practice. After listening to the explanations, the exercisers have understood that the movements of Health Qigong· Twelve Step Daoyin Health Preservation Exercises are designed to dredge the meridians and smooth the circulation of Qi and blood, through taking movements and postures along meridians, acupoint selection along meridians, as well as following the fingers. So the exercise has achieved remarkable results in the prevention and cure of certain diseases.
