The Harmony Thought of Health Qigong

Health Qigong grows from the rich soil of traditional culture, absorbs the balance ideas of the Confucian "attaining a state of harmony" and makes excellent reinvention to the establishment of a strict and scientific method technology, which focus on a philosophy of mean containing "nature and humanity", "unity of body and soul", "unity of motion and stillness", and "unity of Yin and Yang" in terms of keeping in good health. The earliest and a most comprehensive explanation of harmony is the Doctrine of the Mean, which said "while there are no stirrings of pleasure, anger, sorrow, or joy, the mind may be said to be in the state of Equilibrium. When those feelings have been stirred, and they act in their due degree, there ensues what may be called the state of Harmony. This Equilibrium is the great root from which grows all the human actings in the world, and this Harmony is the universal path which they all should pursue. Let the states of equilibrium and harmony exist in perfection, and a happy order will prevail throughout heaven and earth, and all things will be nourished and flourish. It reveals the relationship between mean and harmony, which considers mean as harmony. Mean is the culture thought, method and standard of Confucianism, and harmony is the core thought. The Book of Classics translated "Harmony is in tune! The Book of Shun interpretates" The octave be harmonic, no phase takes away." Therefore, harmony is the state that many elements are in tune. "Harmony actually fosters new things and similarity doesn't sustain" put forth by the thinker Shibo of Western-Chou of Chinese Dynasty, and "seek harmony but not uniformity" stated by Confucius had described the essence of harmony. Those above illustrate that harmony is the unity of opposites, diversity , unity and coordination, a dynamic overall coordination relationship, state and realm of things in development.

According to Huangdi Neijing, harmony is the necessary condition for all lives to maintain balance, such as Yin and Yang and the Nature of the passages Element Theory. It not only thinks that "When Yin and Yang is in harmony, the mind will be healthy", but also claims that only when "the inside and outside of body is reconcile" can ensure that "evil cannot harm the society". It also put forward "when they are in harmony, it refers to the supreme degree". Therefore, health preservation should take harmony as the best state, and finally achieve the organic harmony between body and soul, motion and stillness of functional activity, human and nature. The harmony concept of Health Qigong is that man should take Zhongding (stand still posture) first, and the body must take correctness as the essential. When the body is functioning correctly, then man can do everything correct. Zhongding is that the body should be correct, which requires the heel to be still, and the center of gravity is stable. The ancients in China believed that Zhong is the middle, unbiased and no overpassed, as the Song and Yuan Study said: "Equilibrium is unbiased and no overpassed. Take this in mind and be unbiased. Implement it in things and there will be not overpassed." And it is believed that this goes along with the time. As Zhu Xi put, "the equilibrium is unsteady and goes along with the time, it is the common reason." The ancient Chinese people used it to deal with things, believing that it was the great principle to deal with things. Namely, "only when dealing with things in equilibrium will get success. So it is the great principle. "Under the influence of traditional culture equilibrium, the practice of Qigong requires to stand straight, namely for the head position of "hang upward straightly and relax” at the same time, and puts forward that the body and limbs loosely sink down till the feet at the same time. In this way, the top of the head should be upward, two feet grasp the ground, and every joint be loose and connect. Thus, although under the effect of "pull up and down", when standing in equilibrium, the body is not rigid. The two feet stand still can cultivate the subject consciousness of self-reliance and self-respect. The stability of the center of gravity can cultivate the character of the impartiality and being able to stoop or stand erect of practitioners, making them grasp themselves properly in the dynamic and applying them to daily life. The harmony philosophy of Health Qigong can cultivate the virtuous, honest character and help distinguish the good from the bad. Harmony is the coordination of various aspects of things and phenomena as well as the special unity of diversity. China's traditional sports regimen takes body as the means to recognize and practise this philosophy, which manifests the essence of its development. Health Qigong is an inner and outside sports which pays attention to the body and mind and sees physical activity, breathing and psychological adjustment as the main form. Practice of Health Qigong takes exercises of regulating the body, the breath and the mind so that the practitioner presents a state of harmony, comfortable, soft-breath and peaceful-mind. The practitioner should accumulate and sum up the experience and comprehend the state of practice, so as to improve the quality of practice. In traditional Chinese medicine, the life activities of human beings as birth, grow, senility, and death are often explained by the essence of energy, pneuma and spirit combined, interconversion, prosperity and decline. The three parts are inseparable, interdependent. Energy converts pneuma, pneuma produce energy and pneuma produce spirit, which is in charge of energy and pneuma. The three are the treasure of the body, so, the human body is closely related to the harmony unity of the three. As the three are associated with the activity of the five internal organs, which contains energy, masters the conversion of pneuma and regulate balance of Yin and Yang, pneuma and blood, namely signifies the unity of the three. Health Qigong grows from the trinity of the human life overall view, construct in the infinite harmony of the life phenomenon. It’s a free movement accords with life, of which every breath and stroke embodies the harmony and unity beauty of life spirit and body. The comprehensive exercise of  Body Regulation, Qi Regulation and Mind Regulation adjusts the external form and internal potential of the human body to a harmony state, so as to improve the overall function and achieve the goal of physical fitness. The practice method of “Three Regulations in One” fully embodies the connotation of harmony.

The ancients of China used harmony in doing things, believing it was the successful way of doing everything. That is to say, "Only to do the things in harmony will get succeed, so harmony is the successful way of doing everything." Due to the influence of harmony principle in Chinese cultural tradition, Health Qigong not only pursues the Yin and Yang harmony, but also pursues the overall harmony of multiple elements. The highest goal of Health Qigong is harmony. In this regard, the concept of Yin and Yang harmony and the overall concept of harmony reflects the harmony of inside and outside of body and mind, of human and of man and society, of man and nature, which is a dynamic relationship and state of overall coordination, coexistence and co-development. Harmony contributes to the special beauty of Health Qigong, which regards the physical and mental harmony of the body as true, the interpersonal harmony as good, the harmony of nature and humanity as beautiful. Therefore, the body and mind harmony of Health Qigong contributes greatly to people's physical and mental health. The interpersonal harmony concept of Health Qigong is helpful to interpersonal communication and social stability. The nature and humanity harmony concept of Health Qigong can help develop the environmental protection consciousness of people and countries around the world, enabling them to work together for the maintenance of world peace and development.
